Buttermilk biscuits recipe

To ensure light and fluffy results, don’t overwork the dough.

Ingredients

  • 3½ cups self-rising flour
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1½ tsp sugar
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1¼ cups buttermilk
  • 2 Tbsp butter, melted
How to Make It
  1. Preheat oven to 400°. Combine first 3 ingredients in a large bowl; stir well. Cut shortening into flour mixture with a pastry blender or fork until crumbly. Add buttermilk, stirring just until dry ingredients are moistened.
  2. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead lightly 3 or 4 times. Pat dough to 1-inch thickness; cut with a 3-inch round cutter, and place on a lightly greased baking sheet.
  3. Bake at 400° for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Brush tops with melted butter.
