This tomato sauce is slightly sweet, thanks to a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar, which combats the acidity in the tomatoes. Everyone will love the sauce whether they’re food critics or not. Who knows, it might even help you land your dream job!

  • Yield: 3 cups
  • Preparation Time: 5 Minutes
  • Cooking Time: 25 Minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
  • ¼ cup diced yellow onion (about 1 small onion)
  • ½ tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (17.6-ounce) carton crushed tomatoes
  • 1½ tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • salt and pepper, to taste
How to Make It
  1. In a medium saucepan set over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of the butter.
  2. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, 3 to 4 minutes.
  3. Add the crushed red pepper flakes and stir. Stir in the minced garlic for just a minute more, being careful not to burn it.
  4. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the brown sugar, salt and pepper, Italian seasoning, cumin, and nutmeg, and stir. Let the sauce simmer over medium-low heat for 20 minutes.
  5. Remove from the heat, add the remaining tablespoon of butter, and stir.
  6. You may serve tomato sauce immediately over your favorite pasta, for example, or chill sauce for up to 2 days in your refrigerator.
