On a cold fall or winter night, this hearty casserole is pure comfort. A savory filling of lamb and beef simmered in red wine and seasonings is crowned with a creamy, crispy breadcrumb-topped mash of celery root, sweet potato, and parsnips spiked with horseradish.

Ingredients

  • 1 large celery root (celeriac), peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 parsnips, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • ½ cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound lean ground lamb
  • 8 ounces lean ground beef
  • ½ cup chopped onion (1 medium)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ⅔cup shredded carrot (1 large)
  • ½ cup dry red wine
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 3 teaspoons snipped fresh thyme
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg or ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup fresh bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
